Education Specialist - Literacy
Position Overview:
The Education Specialist provides instructional support to teachers to ensure each student is reading at grade level. This includes providing direct coaching, observational feedback, and instructional planning support.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide direct, one-on-one support/coaching to teachers to ensure effective instruction for all reading teachers.
- Provide analysis of district wide trends in literacy and develop plans for improvement.
- Deliver model lessons and participate in collaborative planning with teachers to promote a strong instructional program that meets a variety of student needs.
- Create and adopt district wide literacy strategies by sharing research-based methods of instruction.
- Evaluate lesson plans and recommend improvements.
- Share lesson planning best practices.
- Encourage and coach teachers to use a variety of instructional methods.
- Work with small groups of students in an intervention setting for English instruction.
- Utilize intervention team members when needed.
- Collaborate with state school board colleagues and develop relationships with those that can act as valuable resources.
- Promote a love of reading throughout the district.
- Observe classroom instruction and provide timely feedback to teachers, both written and verbal.
- Participate, and in some cases, deliver district level English language instructional training.
- Maintains records of activities and observation.
- Coach and mentor new teachers, particularly those without an education degree or experience.
- Together with teachers, determine district-wide reading lists.
- Collaborate with library and media specialists to procure reading materials.
- Other duties as needed and assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have a Master's degree in education and a current Alabama Teaching Certificate. Experience in instructional design and development. Significant experience in English language arts education. Extensive experience in K-12 education with some experience in academic leadership.

For employees starting work after the beginning date of the work term, the salary will be pro-rated and based on the number of contract days left in the school year, divided by the remaining months in the contract year.
