Jefferson County is seeking well-qualified, motivated Sewer Grease and Oil Control Inspectors to conduct sewer grease control inspections of food service facilities to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Employees in this job class frequently interact with business owners, food service workers, plumbers, and other contractors to answer questions and provide information regarding inspections and sewer grease control codes and ordinances.
During sewer grease control inspections, individuals perform tests and collect samples to be analyzed in a laboratory. Sewer Grease and Oil Control Inspectors are responsible for producing detailed written reports and documentation of all inspection activities and results.

Minimum Qualifications- Driver's license.
- Experience providing customer service (e.g., enforcing/explaining policies and procedures, responding to complaints).
- Experience in plumbing installation, sewer line installation, sewer line maintenance, sewer line cleaning, or video inspection of sewer systems.
- Coursework or training in water quality sampling, inspections, analysis, environmental studies, or other related field.
- Work experience inspecting installation and/or maintenance of grease control devices (e.g., interceptors, traps).
- Work experience with wastewater testing equipment (e.g., pH testers, conductivity meters).
Job Duties
- Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
- Documents various inspection activities by filing paperwork, completing forms/checklists, and entering information into a computer database for record‑keeping purposes.
- Prepares for inspections by scheduling visits, reviewing existing documentation, mapping locations, planning routes, researching codes, and reviewing ordinances in order to maintain efficient operations.
- Conducts sewer grease/oil control inspections by visiting facilities, collecting samples, reviewing plans, and performing tests to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Checks manholes downstream of food service facilities to determine if grease/oil is present in the sewer system.
- Collects oil/grease samples from food service facilities and submits to laboratory personnel for analysis.
- Completes chain of custody forms for collected oil/grease samples for documentation purposes.
- Conducts dye testing to verify that plumbing fixtures are appropriately connected to grease removal devices and sewer systems.
Job involves moderate physical exertion for sustained periods such as walking or standing; may require climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed in external field environments. May involve hand and power tools; may be exposed to inclement weather, bio‑hazard materials, and dangerous conditions such as working around traffic and construction.
