Job Summary

The Energy Manager is responsible for promoting and facilitating energy conservation by identifying and implementing various options for saving energy, leading awareness programs, and monitoring energy usage and utility rates. They focus on energy conservation and energy efficiency of campus systems and are the leader of the university energy programs. The Energy Manager works hand in hand with the leadership of HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing groups under the direction of the Director of Utilities.

Duties

& Essential Job Functions
  • Promotes energy efficiency by developing and implementing university energy efficiency measures.
  • Calculates/determines energy efficiency and savings, develops energy efficiency program strategies, and makes recommendations to the university staff and leadership by evaluating energy audit and inspection information.
  • Obtains important information pertaining to energy efficiency on campus and in campus facilities by conducting energy audits, inspections, and studies.
  • Provides monthly and annual electric, gas, and water utility reports for Facilities staff, tracks utility budgets, and tracks the Energy Utilization index (EUI) for the campus. Manages energy tracking, performs statistical analysis for strategic planning and forecasting, establishes utility benchmarks, and outlines cost savings targets and objectives.
  • Provides technical expertise in the identification of operational performance improvements and implementation strategies.
  • Analyzes and provides technical expertise in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, controls, water, wastewater, irrigation, building envelope, and lighting systems, to recommend improvement measures for equipment and components to minimize utility costs.
  • Identifies opportunities for energy efficiency improvements in existing facilities and develops implementing projects by applying knowledge of energy engineering principles and building systems.
  • Promotes and creates a university awareness of energy efficiency and conservation programs and initiatives by preparing and delivering presentations and marketing energy efficiency programs on campus.
  • Assures inclusion of energy efficiency means, methods, and materials in capital projects and assists contractors as required to resolve design and construction progress issues associated with energy efficiency by actively participating in capital project design and construction status reviews.
  • Identifies new and proven energy-saving technology that has a cost benefit for the campus.
  • Includes and maintains certain TCU facilities in the DOE’s Portfolio Manager.
  • Attends energy efficiency-related meetings and conferences through professional organizations on the local, State, and National levels.
  • Works with university and local business peers to stay abreast and implement industry best practices.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Required Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or another related engineering discipline, and 5 years of energy management experience including conducting energy audits and experience with operations of Building/Energy Management and Control Systems, HVAC systems, steam, hot water boilers, and chillers.
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent and 9 years of energy management experience including conducting energy audits and experience with operations of Building/Energy Management and Control Systems, HVAC systems, steam, hot water boilers, and chillers.

    Licensure/Certification /Specialized Training
    • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Certification or ability to achieve such registration within one year of hire.
    • Valid Texas Driver’s License. Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of utility rate/tariff structures for electrical, gas, and water.
    • Knowledge of department‑specific software such as AutoCAD.
    • Skill in some or all components of Microsoft Office.
