FINANCIAL OFFICER I – University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)
OverviewThis position supports the Clinical Research Enterprise/Clinical Research Support Enterprise and provides fiscal and budgetary services to its assigned unit using knowledge of fundamental accounting, financial analysis, and budgetary processes. The role involves managing departmental accounts, ensuring compliance with financial policy, preparing financial statements, and providing guidance to staff.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provide analysis of gross expenditures and make recommendations for maintaining fiscal stability.
- Assist in developing and administering budgets.
- Monitor adherence to financial policy and procedure.
- Supervise departmental accounting operations, including approval and processing of disbursement and internal requisitions.
- Independently develop and provide financial statements and reports to upper management on a regular or requested basis.
- Establish and maintain financial management databases and systems conforming to standard accounting practices.
- Set up Greenphire and other payment portals.
- Manage study accounts for complex collaborating divisions/departments and provide ongoing financial analysis of departmental accounting functions.
- Assure proper accounting for state, grant, contract, and/or revenue accounts.
- Perform monthly account reconciliation and variance analysis for department PI reports, P‑Card reconciliation, study participant reimbursement, and residual processes.
- Handle Accounts Payable/Receivable invoice processing for study‑related expenditures and reconcile sponsor payments.
- Act as liaison with University financial staff and vendors, complying with UAB bid policy and procedures.
- Coordinate with departments, central finance, and OSP; work with Systems team to set up financial tracking systems.
- Enter effort reclassification data into Oracle Financial System.
- Manage travel reimbursement payments to employees and all operational study‑related accounts payable.
- Make decisions regarding the use of financial resources.
- Provide financial guidance to assigned staff and coordinate integration with university accounting system.
- Prepare and/or supervise departmental personnel action forms; assume some payroll duties.
- Supervise staff (Financial Associate) and handle related human resources responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
$43,890 – $71,320
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field and two (2) years of related experience (work experience may substitute for education).
- Experience in a clinical research environment.
- Moderate‑Advanced Excel skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multi‑faceted environment.
- Ability to manage and adapt to change in the shifting landscape of clinical research.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
