Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies.
Nature of WorkThe Correctional Cadet is an entry-level position for high school and college students within the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Cadets are assigned to the Montgomery County Detention Facility and perform duties related to corrections work without holding correctional officer authority.
Correction cadets receive on‑the‑job training to learn to enforce life and property protection, crime prevention, and clerical duties. They provide assistance in areas that do not involve direct contact with inmates, work under close direction from experienced correction officers, and follow established operating procedures.
During the program, cadets are evaluated for efficiency, performance, and eligibility for appointment as a correctional officer trainee. Successful cadets may apply to become correctional officers after graduating, meeting the required age of 19, passing required physical and polygraph examinations, and completing a minimum six‑month cadet period and jail management course.
Work Responsibilities- Assist agency members in accomplishing work objectives as assigned.
- Write detailed incidents, activities, and other reports.
- Learn and practice techniques, including crime scene preservation and evidence collection.
- Provide assistance to correctional officers in the Detention Facility in central control and administration, and perform duties not requiring direct inmate contact.
- Perform duties of the Station Clerk as assigned.
- Staff agency informational displays or booths.
- Perform administrative duties throughout the agency as assigned.
- Attend and participate in training sessions and other meetings as required.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of principles and procedures found in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and other relevant manuals.
- Strong community relations skills to interact with a wide range of people, including non‑English speaking and persons with medical or mental conditions.
- Good oral and written communication skills, including speaking effectively, listening, and conveying empathy.
- Ability to make effective decisions for routine situations and use discretion, judgment, and confidentiality.
- Ability to complete assignments and reports in a timely manner and prioritize diverse tasks.
- Ability to maintain composure and work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to learn and apply training provided by the agency.
- Ability to understand, adhere to, and follow agency policies, procedures, and regulations.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate agency vehicles in accordance with regulations.
- Pass a comprehensive background investigation and random drug screening.
Cadets work in the Montgomery County Detention Facility, providing assistance in areas that do not involve direct contact with inmates.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED certificate and must be at least 18 years old but not older than 21 years of age.
