NATURE OF WORK
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to inspect residential and commercial structures and lots for compliance with the International Property Maintenance Code, ordinances, and related regulations and requirements. Employees in this class serve as the department's APOSTC-certified law enforcement professional, responsible for directing and coordinating complex, multi-party, or escalated code enforcement cases that go beyond routine inspection duties. Work responsibilities involve developing case strategies, ensuring due process, preparing legal documentation, presenting cases in administrative hearings and court, approving or authorizing higher-level enforcement actions, overseeing nuisance and weed abatement activities at a program level, coordinating with contractors and other City departments, and providing guidance and technical direction to Property Maintenance Inspectors and administrative staff.
Fieldwork focuses on case verification, evidence gathering, or high-risk assessments rather than routine inspections. The work is performed independently, with review to ensure compliance, procedural accuracy, and program effectiveness. This position reports to the Chief Property Maintenance Inspector.
High school diploma or GED, current certification by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) and at least two (2) years of experience in a law enforcement role requiring independent decision-making, evidence collection, investigation, documentation of violations, and preparation of materials for administrative or court proceedings, or other APOST-certified position involving complaint response, ordinance or statutory enforcement, and interaction with the public in an enforcement capacity.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and be exposed to insects, rodents, unfriendly pets, and poisonous vegetation. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as needed to operate city vehicles. This classification operates under the authority and framework of the Montgomery Police Department (MPD), deriving its enforcement powers from the MPD standards.
