Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to learn and perform basic entry‑level technical work involving the installation and maintenance of the Airport Authority’s IT‑related systems and equipment (software, applications, and hardware/infrastructure). Work responsibilities include communicating with users, installing hardware or software, supporting airport networks, troubleshooting and resolving IT‑related problems. Employees are supervised closely until becoming more proficient and then assist airport IT users to ensure their systems function properly and meet their needs.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, configures, and tests various IT‑related systems, components, and devices such as networking/servers, PCs, VOICE/IP systems, communication lines, LAN/WAN systems, internet software, operating systems, PC application software, PC networks, and/or e‑mail using blueprints, schematics, and reference manuals to provide user functionality, upgrade systems with new software and hardware, and ensure airport IT systems meet user needs.
  • Maintains, diagnoses, and monitors technology‑related systems, including network hardware and infrastructure and software systems, using various tools and diagnostic equipment to assist users in performing their functions and resolve user problems.
  • Analyzes, troubleshoots, and resolves basic hardware and software, network/server, and/or communications problems using system notifications, communication mediums, and reference manuals to ensure necessary repairs, replacements, and modifications are completed and IT‑related systems function properly.
  • Investigates end‑user device software and hardware problems (Help Desk) using computer software tools and probing questions following departmental guidelines and standard troubleshooting procedures to resolve problems or acquire additional assistance.
  • Performs administrative departmental functions, including maintaining IP address lists, completing trouble tickets, assisting higher‑level IT staff, recommending hardware and software solutions, and conducting technology‑related training using electronic media, manuals, and department forms following departmental policies and procedures and all related reference sources for the IT Department.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of personal computers and telecommunications systems and equipment, including operating systems, application software, and hardware functionality to troubleshoot, repair, and educate users.
  • Knowledge of personal computer and operating systems software.
  • Knowledge of acceptable methods and procedures used in troubleshooting computer hardware and software problems.
  • Knowledge of multiple software applications commonly used in local government organizations, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other specialty business applications, diagnostic tools, and software.
  • Knowledge of the operation of standard software packages distributed to most Montgomery airport end users.
  • Knowledge of PC‑Windows products and utilities needed to troubleshoot problems, set up users, and maintain products.
  • Knowledge of PC and server technologies needed to provide user functionality, email, webpage access, and maintain connectivity.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling, media techniques, and transport solutions such as T1 & T3, plenum space, and fiber optic cabling.
  • Knowledge of basic WAN communications (network routers, switches, and media modules).
  • Knowledge of file server hardware/software for installing and maintaining file servers.
  • Knowledge of network equipment such as Ethernet, routers, and switches—including installation and configuration.
  • Knowledge of PC application support processes for troubleshooting applications.
  • Knowledge of security concepts for PCs/LAN/WAN, encryption, and end‑user devices for configuring user profiles.
