Alabama State University invites applications for the position of Station Manager - WVAS. The Station Manager is responsible for the daily operations, personnel, compliance, and financial success of the station. The WVAS Radio Station Manager will be responsible for leading, coordinates and supervises staff engaged in programming and operations activities at a full‑time, professional radio station located at, and licensed to, historic Alabama State University.

The primary format of the station is jazz, but daily programming also includes blues and gospel as well as talk and sports offerings. The Station Manager must be a leader with the vision, energy, and experience to build on the station’s longtime commitment to the information and entertainment needs of its audience while expanding the station’s engagement with the wider community.

The WVAS Radio Station Manager will be responsible for managing budgets, driving revenue through advertising or, in public radio, leading fundraising, donor cultivation, and member drives. This position reports to the University’s Executive Director for Marketing and Strategic Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Managerial
  • Oversees all staff, programming, administrative, financial, technical, and operational aspects of WVAS
  • Develops and executes all elements of the strategic plan for WVAS
  • Manages WVAS staff, to include goal setting, coaching, conducting annual evaluations, and hiring plans
  • Monitors industry trends, technology and the station’s competitive environment
  • Ensures an active social media presence and functioning website for the station
  • Serves as primary station liaison to the FCC, Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), Alabama Broadcasters Association, and other professional and community organizations
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements to include maintaining station license as well as observance of all radio broadcasting rules, regulations, and policies
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations
  • Acts as a liaison between WVAS and the community as well as University faculty, staff, and administration
  • Participates in professional development as applicable
  • Provides on‑air presence as required
  • Performs all other job‑related duties as directed by the supervisor
Fiscal
  • Prepares operational budgets and manages all expenditures of WVAS
  • Manages grants awarded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and all associated processes in a timely manner to meet grant deadlines, including budgets, audits, surveys, and training
  • Develops and executes a robust fundraising plan to include revenue goals as well as securing donors and underwriters from a pool of listener‑contributors, foundations and corporate entities
  • Maintains an up‑to‑date database of listener‑members, donors and underwriters
  • Coordinates and oversees a minimum of two (2) major fundraising activities annually
  • Seeks and secures additional grants from federal, state and non‑profit entities
  • Works with Program Assistant to submit and monitor requisitions and purchase orders
Programming
  • Plans, develops and implements, in coordination with the Program Director and staff, a comprehensive format for WVAS to include excellent music, news, talk, and sports programming that appeals to current, new and diverse audiences
  • Develops regional and national programming initiatives based on knowledge of audience tastes and trends
  • Plans, develops and implements marketing strategies to promote programs to current and potential audience members
  • Oversees news operation to ensure excellence of content and timely delivery of first‑rate newscasts, specials, and “live” news events
  • Advances local news opportunities for on‑air and digital platforms in partnership with staff
Infrastructure
  • Oversees and ensures maintenance of the station's equipment and facilities
  • Coordinates with station engineer on all required maintenance, repairs, and upgrades
