Production Manager (Open) – Lead the effort to improve production results for the entire paper machine operation from waste paper receiving through finishing. Drive continuous improvement in the safety, quality assurance, customer service, productivity, operating efficiencies and cost containment of all aspects of the operation.
Key Responsibilities- Provide leadership, technical expertise and training to guide changes to plant process and procedures to reduce process variability, improve product performance in customer plants and increase operating efficiency.
- Lead and direct a production team consisting of a Superintendent, Technical Manager, Shift Supervisors and three rotating shift production crews.
- Collaborate closely with the Maintenance Manager and Technical Manager to correct operational issues, improve equipment runnability, address training needs and standardize processes.
- Facilitate continuous‑improvement projects: identify, define, prioritize, assess recommendations, plan and implement changes, track activities and report progress.
- Manage machine runnability on a daily basis with support from direct reports and staff.
- Identify opportunities to improve existing procedures and related tools to meet the requirements of an evolving workflow process.
- Prioritize maintenance needs and direct resources accordingly on a daily basis.
- Participate in downtime maintenance, readiness planning and project‑management activities.
- Perform all required duties and tasks in accordance with company accounting policies and financial control procedures.
- Support the Mill Safety Program fully, fostering a safety culture and driving the team toward an incident‑free workplace.
- Train production employees in analytical problem‑solving and decision‑making techniques.
- Minimum technical background:
Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or related technical field; 5–20 years of experience in paper manufacturing, industrial or process engineering. - Pulp and Paper degree and/or background is a plus.
- Prior experience managing salaried and hourly production teams in a paper mill is required.
- Technical experience in a paper mill is required.
- Excellent team leadership abilities and interpersonal skills.
- Experience on a cylinder board machine is a plus.
- Process improvement knowledge such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc., is a plus.
- Statistical Process Control knowledge is desired.
- Ability to efficiently multi‑task and meet stated objectives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data analysis.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong time‑management skills.
- Adherence to healthy safety practices.
