Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool role at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring an active AL or compact license and at least 18 months of Med Surg/ICU experience.

Details
  • Work within the Staff Float Pool Med Surg unit of a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med Surg/Oncology, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology units
  • Patient ratios range from 1:4-6, typically 1:4
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a), 36-48 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to similar units (MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task, ICU-ER/ICU holds)
  • EMR:
    Cerner required;
    Epic experience also considered
  • Equipment used includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • 4-week schedule cycle utilizing Smart Square, no self-scheduling
Requirements
  • Active AL or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of experience in Med Surg and/or ICU required
  • Cerner EMR experience required if background is strictly ICU
  • Unit-specific skills may include wound care, chest tube care, NGT, PEG, trach care, IV starts, foley/drain management, and medication administration
  • Telemetry experience preferred and should be disclosed if applicable
Additional Information
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this position
  • Support staff on units includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurses, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry techs
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ year receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Former staff must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
  • Holiday coverage includes one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though not guaranteed time off prior to arrival
  • Facility maintains blackout RTO dates throughout 2026 with limited exceptions requiring management approval
  • Scrub color is unrestricted
  • Free parking available in designated deck levels
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible
