Description

American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for a float pool position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of Med Surg or ICU experience.

Details
  • Float pool position at a 492-bed hospital that is a Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • May float to units including 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North Med Surg/Oncology, 3 South Orthopedics, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, orthopedic, and urology/ENT patients
  • Patient ratios typically 1:4-6 depending on unit assignment
  • 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a) on a 36/48 schedule, 36 standard hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirement
  • Floating required to like units (Med Surg to Med Surg/ICU tasks/ER holds, or ICU to ICU/Med Surg tasks with a limit of 3/ER holds)
  • Uses Cerner EMR, with Epic experience also considered
  • Utilizes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Support staff on units includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
  • Schedule follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling;
    Smart Square is used for scheduling
Requirements
  • Active RN license (AL or Compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of Med Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; if experience is strictly ICU, Cerner experience is required
  • At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment
  • Unit-specific skills may include wound care, chest tube management, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG/colostomy care, central line blood draws, and PCA pump management
  • Chemo administration certification highly preferred for Oncology unit assignment
  • Telemetry experience preferred and should be disclosed if applicable
  • Must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for consideration
  • One reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
  • Copies of certifications required for consideration
Additional Information
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • With lower patient ratios, RNs are expected to provide hands-on care including turning patients and assisting with ADLs and baths
  • Orientation for new or returning (1+ year absence) travelers includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific days off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Facility maintains blackout dates throughout the year during which time off requests are not approved without special authorization
  • Up to 7 days of time off can be pre-approved excluding blackout dates
  • Any scrub color is acceptable
  • Free parking available in the deck (2nd through 4th levels)
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Former staff members must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
