Description

American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for a night shift float pool position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of Med Surg/ICU experience.

Details
  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg and specialty units within a 492-bed hospital
  • Units may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med Surg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and Med Surg/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuro, oncology, orthopedic, and urology cases
  • Patient ratios typically range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • Night shift schedule, 7p-7a, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units (e.g., MS to MS, MS to ICU tasks, MS to ER/holds)
  • Uses Cerner EMR;
    Epic experience will be considered
  • Utilizes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry monitored by techs, but RNs required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Support staff includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist
Requirements
  • Active RN license (AL or compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certification required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner experience required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • Trauma or surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignments
  • Unit-specific skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG, colostomy/ostomy care, and central line blood draws
  • Chemo certification preferred but not required for Oncology unit
  • Physical ability to assist with patient turning, bathing, and ADLs in lower-ratio units
Additional Information
  • Facility is a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • New-to-facility or returning travelers (gone 1+ years) receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Rehire orientation length depends on last date worked at the facility
  • One major and one minor seasonal holiday coverage expected per policy, though specific dates are not guaranteed off
  • Facility maintains blackout RTO dates throughout the year, limiting time-off approval during those periods
  • Time off can be approved for up to 7 days excluding blackout dates
  • Uses a 4-week self-scheduling cycle via Smart Square (no self-scheduling)
  • Scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Parking available in designated deck levels at no cost
  • First-time travelers will be considered with sufficient experience
  • Previous staff must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible; no local candidates accepted
