Definition

Responsible for ensuring the safety and well‑being of patients, staff, and visitors within the Carastar Health settings in Montgomery, Elmore, Autauga, and Lowndes counties. This role works closely with clinical teams, security personnel, and other departments to create a safe and therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and scan consumers upon entering the buildings for contraband.
  • Monitor location while sitting at post during shift.
  • Responsible for locking and unlocking buildings and setting or turning off alarms when needed.
  • Assist with transportation of consumers as needed.
  • Routinely monitor grounds and facilities for unsafe conditions.
  • Assist with deescalating consumers who are agitated or out of control.
  • Assist with conducting routine fire drills.
  • Routinely check fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems to ensure they are in working order and are certified according to Department of Mental Health Standards.
  • Participate in training activities related to security, safety, customer service and dealing with aggressive/assaultive behavior, dealing with persons with serious mental illnesses and others as assigned.
  • Assist with ensuring Carastar vehicles are maintained and serviced as required.
  • Train staff on safety and security issues as well as other areas assigned.
  • Serve as courier between buildings.
  • Complete reports and paperwork as required by the agency.
  • Perform related work as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of behavioral health safety practices and protocol.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in incident reporting and safety documentation.
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting and carrying.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with reliable transportation, liability insurance, and a driver’s record that is acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.
Qualifications
  • High School Degree or equivalent with a minimum of two years
