Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to provide carpentry support to crews working for the construction, maintenance, and repair of City properties. Incumbents are responsible for performing skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

They perform skilled hand and bench carpentry duties including operating power-driven equipment and using hand tools. Their assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions, sketches, or blueprints from a supervisor. Work is reviewed by inspection during work process or upon completion of assignment for compliance with specifications and standards.

The distinguishing characteristics of this classification within the series include responsibility for performing journey-level work. Carpenter I incumbents are learning the trade and, typically, do not yet possess the proficiency required of a Carpenter II incumbent. Direct supervision is received from the Building Construction Supervisor.

Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
