Equipment Mechanic I
Performs repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may involve heavy equipment used in construction of highways and bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Employees perform assignments independently but refer unusual issues to the supervisor.
Equipment Mechanic IIPerforms advanced repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors and works with heavy equipment used in highway construction. Employees work independently but refer unusual issues to the supervisor.
Essential Duties Equipment Mechanic I- Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
- Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Checks lighting and wiring to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
- Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into the fleet information management system.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
- Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment; may move related items as required.
- Prepares vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
- Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
- Uses computerized diagnostic analyzers to perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Performs quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.

Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. Full‑time or prorated part‑time experience counts.
- Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Experience: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. Full‑time or prorated part‑time experience counts.
- Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Valid driver’s license required; position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must possess a Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Knowledge of:
- Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
- Using applicable hand and power tools and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engines.
- Brake repairs including anti‑locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes, and hydraulic brake systems.
- Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment according to defined codes and specifications.
- Using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
Skill in:
- Following applicable safety standards, practices, and procedures.
- Reading and interpreting electrical diagrams and schematics.
