Sanitation Truck Driver

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and the Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate garbage packers, truck‑mounted trash loaders, and other refuse collection vehicles in order to service the Sanitation Department’s customers.

Sanitation Truck Drivers serve as the leader of a crew consisting of a driver and two service maintenance workers; drivers are responsible for setting the pace of work and ensuring the safety of the crew and the public.

• Operating sanitation vehicles
• Leading the work crew
• Performing preventive maintenance checks
• Communicating with customers and the public
• Assisting in manual labor tasks
• Ensuring assigned routes are completed in a timely manner
• Working with limited supervision, exercising independent judgement on routes

Six (6) months of experience operating equipment such as garbage packers, sanitation vehicles, buses, tractor‑trailers, and other vehicles requiring a Class B CDL or higher.

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher.

Must work overtime, nights, and weekends for emergencies and special events.

Must possess and maintain an insurable driving record.

• Stand, stoop, bend, or kneel as needed to operate and inspect equipment, perform preventive maintenance checks, and perform manual labor duties.
• Sit for extended periods of time, up to 2 hours, while operating equipment.
• Operate equipment from an enclosed cab while being exposed to inclement weather, dust, and dirt.

Employment may be conditional upon the potential employee passing a pre‑employment drug test. The test may require submission of a sample of hair, finger nails, and/or urine that will verify illegal drug use.
