Work Schedule:
- Full Time Day Shifts- (80 hours bi-weekly; 4-ten hour shifts per week)
- At least 50% of hours worked must be 12pm or later
The 8300 Medical-Surgical Oncology Unit at Tri Health Bethesda North Hospital is a 44-bed unit that cares for a diverse patient population with medical-surgical needs including cardiothoracic, abdominal, vascular, gastrointestinal, women’s health, surgeries and surgical oncology patients. Our unit provides a supportive learning environment for both new graduates and experienced nurses, offering the chance to master advanced clinical skills, such as the care of cardiothoracic surgical patients, chest tubes, and patients undergoing oncology or vascular treatments.
Nurses on this unit develop significant expertise in cancer care, surgical oncology, and managing complex conditions related to acute and chronic vascular diseases. In addition to handling advanced medical equipment and tools essential for cancer treatment, the 8300 team is committed to continuous professional growth. We are affiliated with renowned organizations, including the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society, Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing, the American Cancer Society, and the American Nurses Association.
Nurses are encouraged to pursue certifications in Medical-Surgical Nursing, GERO-BC, palliative care, and the ONS Chemotherapy Certification, further enhancing their skills in providing comprehensive, compassionate care. The 8300 unit combines a rich educational environment with a focus on patient-centered care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Under the direction of and in collaboration with the nurse manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager has 24-hour accountability for their area(s) of responsibility. This accountability encompasses patient care outcomes, service excellence, human resource issues, fiscal management, quality improvement compliance, and communication. Emphasis should be placed on creating a positive environment that fosters professional growth and retention. This environment is supported by the Assistant Nurse Manager acting as a role model and as a mentor and coach to the staff.

Job Requirements- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required
- Certification within specialty area within two years of assuming position (required)
- Registered Nurse license required
- Membership in related professional organization preferred
- Minimum of 2-3 years of acute care nursing experience required
- 1-2 years’ experience Progressive Leadership Nursing preferred
- Supports delivery of quality patient care to achieve desired outcomes and participates in developing and revising unit policies and procedures.
- Serves as a clinical and administrative resource to staff; collaborates with physicians and the healthcare team to plan, organize, and evaluate care.
- Assists with overall nursing operations, including annual planning, coordinating patient care during assigned shifts, and managing the unit in the nurse manager’s absence.
- Participates in staffing efforts including interviewing, hiring, orienting, and retaining employees; applies progressive discipline when needed.
- Creates and maintains a supportive work environment that promotes engagement and retention.
- Supports staff development by identifying educational opportunities, collaborating with nurse educators, mentoring employees, and providing ongoing performance feedback.
