Position Summary
This electrical engineer position performs design, systems, program, plant component, and nuclear engineering activities in support of the safe, reliable, and efficient operations of nuclear generation power plants. Responsibilities include leading the development of plant modifications, calculations, engineering evaluations, operability determinations, maintenance of design basis documents, and resolution of corrective action issues. The role also involves overseeing other engineers in the review of design documents, assessing adverse conditions, conducting engineering analyses, and applying project management skills.
Key Responsibilities- Lead or oversee the development of plant modifications or plant program documents.
- Perform, lead, or supervise the performance of assigned systems or complex troubleshooting of nuclear power plant systems, including calculations, engineering evaluations, and operability determinations.
- Maintain design basis documents and resolve corrective action issues.
- Support continued plant operation and assess adverse conditions.
- Demonstrate project management skills in scheduling and resource allocation.
- Monitor and evaluate preventative maintenance to improve equipment reliability.
- Provide technical leadership for other engineers and designers, acting as the technical lead for quality improvement initiatives.
- Develop schedules, utilize work‑management tools, and oversee engineering-related activities at a subject‑matter‑expert level.
- Attend department and plant meetings, represent the company at industry events, and complete training and other assigned duties.
- Engineer I – Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) and 0–2 years of experience. Must obtain and maintain qualifications for unescorted access to Xcel Energy’s nuclear power plants; may be required to assume emergency response duties and live within 30 or 60 minutes of the station; required to maintain nuclear “fitness for duty” during off‑hours if on call or designated emergency response duty.
- Engineer II – Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) and 2 years of experience. Must obtain and maintain qualifications for unescorted access to Xcel Energy’s nuclear power plants; may be required to assume emergency response duties and live within 30 or 60 minutes of the station; required to maintain fitness for duty during off‑hours if on call or designated emergency response duty;
must demonstrate satisfactory performance and progress toward a career‑level engineering role in the nuclear utility business. - Engineer (Senior) – Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) and 6 years of engineering experience with satisfactory performance in nuclear generating plant operations and/or maintenance processes. Equivalent experience in industrial, naval, or OEM electrical power plant operations is acceptable. Must obtain and maintain qualifications for unescorted access to Xcel Energy’s nuclear power plants; may be required to assume emergency response duties and live within 30 or 60 minutes of the station;
required to maintain nuclear “fitness for duty” during off‑hours if on call or designated emergency response duty.
Preferred qualifications:
Professional Engineer (PE) license and advanced degree in engineering or a related technical field. - Sr. Engineer – Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) and 8 or more years of engineering experience with demonstrated expertise in problem‑solving within nuclear generating plants. Equivalent experience in industrial, naval, or OEM electrical power plant operations may be considered for up to half of the required nuclear experience. Must obtain and maintain qualifications for unescorted access to Xcel Energy’s nuclear power plants;
may be required to assume emergency response duties and live within 30 or 60 minutes of the station; required to maintain nuclear “fitness for duty” during off‑hours if on call or designated emergency response duty. Preferred:
Professional Engineer (PE) license and advanced degree in engineering or a related technical field.
