Health and Safety Officer

The Health and Safety Officer will research and utilize health and safety standards, best practices, and analytical techniques to develop and measure the success of the employee safety program. A large portion of duties would also include the monitoring of job sites to ensure they meet OSHA regulations, company safety policies and quality control of jobsite. The ultimate goal of this position is to create a company-wide culture of safety.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Analyze the impact of safety and environmental compliance on proposed projects
  • Ensure the necessary programs are in place to reduce employee risk
  • Direct the development of training programs to meet objectives
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state and local regulations; including OSHA regulations
  • Maintain consistency for all safety and environmental efforts throughout the company
  • Serve as a resource for employees and management for safety related questions and concerns
  • Assist with audits of safety programs
  • Work with HR department on First Report of Injuries and potential work comp claims
  • Develop a culture of safety among leaders and employees
  • Develop systems and processes to ensure all employees are trained, understand, and comply with all relevant safety requirements and policies
  • Prepare and lead all safety committee meetings
  • Prepare and present quarterly safety training to all staff
  • Manage MSDS program
  • Manage respiratory program and FIT testing
  • Quality control of projects/jobs in process
  • Conduct on-site job site safety audits
  • Manage fleet in fleet management software platform
  • Demonstrated experience with U.S. Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). compliance, and safety requirements
  • Strong knowledge of DOT standards and the ability to ensure regulatory compliance

Additional duties and responsibilities include:

  • Work with all leadership to ensure legal requirements, safety policies and safe work practices are followed at all work sites and during employee travel out of state.
  • Ability to motivate others to improve and promote acceptance, awareness, effectiveness and results of the Employee Safety Program.
  • Willingness to take initiative and work effectively without close supervision, maintain accuracy and quantity of work under pressure of changing priorities, and adaptable and flexible with change.
  • Willingness to take unpopular stance to maintain safe work environment.

Decision rights and authority include:

  • Employee disciplines pertaining to safety violations
  • Ability to shut down operation of job site if unsafe and immediate intervention is required to avoid potential employee harm

Working relationships and scope include:

  • Continuous communication with Safety Committee about areas of focus and safety concerns and issues.
  • Working with Human Resources on employee disciplines in regards to safety, employee injuries and safety policies and programs

Qualifications-Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma
    • Clean driving record
    • 2-5 years' experience of safety program management
    • 2–3 years of hands-on experience with DOT compliance, regulations, and safety requirements.
    • Strong computer skills-Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc.
    • OSHA 10 & 30
    • Hazwhopper certification
    • Experience in forklift training
    • Experience working in mitigation or construction industry
  • Travel:
    This position will require frequent travel to jobs in and around MN and Midwest, including our satellite location in Baxter. This position will require 50% travel and then approx. 50% time spent on-site at Monticello location. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
  • Availability:
    This position will require evening and weekend phone availability to assist in safety-related questions, employee injuries and vehicle accidents, etc.
  • Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
    Walking and/or standing throughout the day. Frequent driving and sitting. Occasionally climbing ladders. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme conditions such as heat. The noise level in the work environment and jobsites can be loud.
  • Normal Working Hours, Additional Working Hours, and Travel Requirements:
    This is a full-time position, working 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week.
