AOT Technical Apprentice III is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary part‑time position that runs from May through the end of October, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with flexibility for candidates.
OverviewThe Agency of Transportation is hiring Technical Apprentices to assist with traffic data collection. Apprentices will drive a state‑owned vehicle for up to seven hours a day to various locations across Vermont to set up automatic traffic counters and install road tubes. Map reading skills and attention to detail for data entry, downloading, and quality checks are essential. Occasionally, apprentices may assist with the installation of in‑road traffic sensors, which involves manual labor.
Responsibilities- Drive a state‑owned vehicle for up to seven hours a day to install automatic traffic counters and road tubes.
- Read maps and navigate to field sites across Vermont.
- Enter, download, and quality‑check traffic data.
- Assist with the installation of in‑road traffic sensors when required.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, carrying equipment up to 40 pounds and traversing rough, wooded, or steep terrain.
- One (1) or more years of college coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- OR two (2) or more years of work experience in civil, construction, or environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Current, valid driver’s license.
- Strong map‑reading and data‑management skills.
- Ability to carry equipment up to 40 pounds and work in outdoor, potentially hazardous conditions.
- Coursework or experience in engineering, construction management, or a related technical field.
Field work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, construction sites, and extreme weather conditions. Duties may require carrying equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and traveling in boats.
