Overview
The UC Tax Auditor position will be assigned to provide coverage to Vermont employers in the Central Vermont Region. Residency in Central Vermont is strongly preferred as regular travel within this region is required. This role audits employer payroll and disbursement records to determine whether wages are properly reported for State Unemployment Insurance (UI). The auditor conducts field assignments to obtain delinquent reports, unreported or misreported wages, business registrations, and addresses potential fraud.
Formal determinations of employer liability for UI and worker misclassification are made, and state and federal laws, regulations, and policies are interpreted and applied to support findings.
As a liaison for the Department of Labor, the UC Tax Auditor works with employers, claimants, and the general public, ensuring excellent customer service. Strong written and verbal communication, regulatory knowledge, and professionalism are essential for engaging with uncooperative or hostile individuals during investigations.
Primary Responsibilities- Utilize knowledge of financial investigative tools and techniques to develop an investigative plan.
- Initiate investigations by gathering facts and evidence, running database checks, examining the current control environment, and preparing investigative summaries documenting findings.
- Maintain awareness of investigative/fraud techniques, privacy laws, bank regulations, and incident handling policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain a wide range of internal and external business relationships.
- Communicate professionally at the executive level.

Environmental FactorsDuties are performed at assigned regional offices, Central Office, and in the field. Considerable travel is required, requiring personal transportation. Incumbents may encounter uncooperative or hostile attitudes during investigations, demanding strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage significant pressure to meet time frames and deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, public, or business administration AND at least one year of professional-level auditing or accounting experience OR two years of Unemployment Compensation experience.
- OR Associate’s degree in accounting, public, or business administration AND at least three years of professional-level auditing or accounting experience OR four years of Unemployment Compensation experience.
- OR High School diploma or equivalent AND at least five years of professional-level accounting or auditing experience OR six years of Unemployment Compensation experience.
