The Department of Taxes’ Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and providing education to taxpayers.
- Collect unpaid taxes on behalf of the state via phone, or otherwise
- Arrange formal payment agreements, propose settlements, and when appropriate, waive selected penalties
- Establish personal liability and initiate bank and wage garnishment orders and property liens
- Educate and outreach to taxpayers to promote and achieve voluntary compliance
- Be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient, and self‑motivated
- Have a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration
- Have excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds

The hourly salary rate for this position ranges from $25.98 to $40.56 and State of Vermont benefits are very competitive. The starting salary for this position may be negotiable depending on experience and qualifications. The annual salary ranges from approximately $54,038.40 to $84,364.80. As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 22 will be $26.50 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $41.37 per hour.
Aboutthe Compliance Division
The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. The team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection agents, and support staff.
Background ChecksThis position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information.
Who May ApplyTax Compliance Officer III (Job Requisition #53612) is open to all state employees and external applicants.
Minimum QualificationsThree (3) years or more of experience in collection of debts, adjustment of claims, determination of financial responsibility, handling accounts receivable, negotiating, or investigation of financial background.
OR
Four (4) years of more of experience in tax preparation or related customer service experience.
