Tax Analyst II (Job Requisition #55271)

Position open to all State employees and external applicants. This role works closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns.

Responsibilities
  • Providing support to taxpayers through phone, e‑mail, and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting mistakes or requesting additional information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.
Ideal Candidate
  • Extension tax knowledge.
  • Experience in business or fiscal duties.
  • Knowledge of local government.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher AND at least one year of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.
  • High school diploma or equivalent or higher AND at least three years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field.
  • One year or more as a Tax Analyst I or Tax Examiner II.
Preferred Qualifications

Degree or coursework in accounting, economics, business administration, public administration, finance, math, or related field.

Salary

As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 22 will be $26.50 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $41.37 per hour.

Background Checks and Fingerprinting

Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018‑01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates.

Candidates have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Employee Working Conditions

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Work volume is often very high, especially from February through June. Incumbents must concentrate on details and perform accurate work amid frequent interruptions. The work of the Tax Analyst II directly affects the financial/tax accounts of Vermont individuals and businesses. Calculations, adjustments, advice, and communications must be accurate and timely. Stressful situations and differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives may occur.
