Whether you are beginning your career or bringing experience from another field, you will find opportunities to learn, grow, and build a long‑term career in public service. In addition to meaningful work, you will enjoy stability, excellent benefits, and professional development opportunities—and room to grow professionally and personally—which come from a career in Vermont state government.

We help Vermonters understand and meet their tax responsibilities while delivering exceptional public service. Every interaction is an opportunity to solve problems, build trust, and make government work better for the people we serve.

What you’ll do
  • Provide in person customer service and front‑desk reception at our Montpelier office.
  • Assist taxpayers by phone and email; triage inquiries and route as needed.
  • Review tax returns for accuracy, correct errors, and request additional information when required.
  • Collaborate with teammates and other state agencies/municipal partners to meet deadlines and service‑level expectations.
  • Support special projects and help maintain efficient workflow processes.
What we’re looking for
  • Experience in business, finance, or fiscal duties and strong customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Vermont/local government is helpful.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex topics to diverse audiences with patience and clarity.
  • Organized, detail‑oriented, and eager to learn new systems and processes.
  • Must be comfortable working at a front desk, handling phones, and responding to email inquiries.
Work conditions and requirements
  • Full‑time, in‑office position located in the Montpelier main office reception area.
  • Reliable personal transportation to the Montpelier office is required.
  • Ability to handle confidential taxpayer information with discretion and professionalism.

No prior tax experience? That’s okay. Experience with taxes, accounting, finance, customer service, or government is helpful but not required. We provide the training needed to help you succeed. Come join a team that values collaboration, integrity, continuous learning, and public service! If you are looking for meaningful work where you can make a difference every day while building valuable skills, we highly encourage you to apply.
