The Department of Taxes' Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and providing education to taxpayers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect unpaid taxes on behalf of the state via phone or otherwise.
  • Arrange formal payment agreements, propose settlements, and when appropriate, waive selected penalties.
  • Establish personal liability and initiate bank or wage garnishment orders and property liens.
  • Educate and outreach to taxpayers to promote and achieve voluntary compliance.

Position Details

Perry. The hourly salary range is $26.50 to $41.37, with annual compensation ranging from approximately $55,120 to $86,049.60, based on a 2080‑hour work year and excluding overtime or other compensation.

About The Compliance Division

The Compliance Division promotes and ensures Vermont taxpayer compliance, focusing on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. The team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection agents, and support staff.

Background Checks

This position requires candidates to be fingerprinted and to pass a background check to be eligible. Background checks are authorized under Vermont law and the Internal Revenue Service.

  • In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018‑01, background investigations and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates may withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a standard office setting. The workload is consistently heavy, requiring prompt and accurate decision‑making. Duties involve sensitive, sometimes controversial subjects that may lead to emotional and adversarial situations. Incumbents must function independently in confrontational or hostile environments, prioritize workload, and multitask effectively. Duties are highly confidential. Occasional travel may be required, using a state vehicle or private transportation.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years or more of experience in the collection of debts, adjustment of claims, determination of financial responsibility, handling accounts receivable, negotiating, or investigating financial background; or four (4) years of experience in tax preparation or related customer service experience.

Total Compensation

The State’s total compensation package is worth about 30% of the total, including:
