OverviewThe Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician II. The role involves highway maintenance tasks such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In winter months, responsibilities include assisting with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. The position may also assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance.

This position is eligible for a sign‑on and retention bonus of up to $2000. Newly hired CDL and non‑CDL holders hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic jobs on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible.
As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 20 will be $23.75 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $36.88 per hour.

Duties require the ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather. Incumbents must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies, and may need to be on call outside of the normal schedule. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule/area and must be reachable by phone. The position involves using tools and lifting materials in maintenance work.
Hazards include working near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, roadside debris, moving traffic, and potential exposure to blood or airborne pathogens. A random drug and alcohol testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required, especially during the winter months, and is a condition of employment.
- One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor, including EITHER: one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
- Or completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Special Requirements- A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
- An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation.
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
- An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
- Non-original probationary employees must obtain the required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
