The Opportunity:

The National Post is hiring a reporter for its Ottawa parliamentary bureau. The bureau covers federal politics for National Post and serves Postmedia, Canada's largest news chain, including the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette.

What you’ll do:

The ideal candidate is an enterprising self-starter and team player with a sense for stories that resonate both on Parliament Hill and across the country.
The candidate should have a nose for ways to add value in terms of perspective, analysis or relevance, that takes reporting beyond that of a typical wire story
The candidate must be able to cultivate sources, find stories buried in documents and break news on tight deadlines, while writing in a way that is accurate, clear, concise and colourful.
Responsibilities include both contributions to the daily news file and writing in-depth features and analysis.
Adding value that transcends the commodified news cycle and seeing beyond the Ottawa bubble are key.
Who you are:
3+ years of newsroom experience, preferably with some background in federal, provincial or municipal politics.
Familiarity with the workings of the federal government.
An understanding of how to break stories using access to information, data-mining and social media.
An understanding of the editorial values of National Post.
Bilingualism is an asset.
On-camera skills are an asset.
