InThis Role, You Will
- Cover U.S. current events and social affairs for Radio-Canada News across TV, radio and digital platforms.
- Produce original reports, interviews, on-air analysis and digital content for Radio-Canada newscasts, TV and radio current affairs programming, and digital platforms.
- Pitch compelling story ideas tailored to Canadian audiences across politics, economics, culture, sports, emerging technology and social/digital trends.
Job Requirements
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. - Experience:
Seven (7) years’ journalism experience or equivalent.
- Deep interest in American politics and society.
- Passion for current trends and issues in emerging digital tech.
- Willingness and availability to travel frequently across the western United States.
- Working knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
- Prior foreign reporting experience is an asset.
- Proven ability to conduct incisive interviews and adapt reporting across digital, TV and radio platforms.
- Strong command of broadcast and digital storytelling formats (both short- and long-form).
- Exceptional written communication skills.
- Fluent bilingualism in English and French.
- High degree of independence and initiative.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to synthesize complex topics clearly and concisely.
- Experience writing for digital platforms is an asset.
- Ability to thrive under pressure.
- Adaptability and tact.
Strong writing and storytelling skills on TV, radio and digital platforms. - Strong understanding of production and broadcasting workflows.
- Solid knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Monitor breaking news and current events across a diverse range of sources.
- Build and maintain a strong network of local contacts and sources.
- Attend story meetings. Pitch and be assigned story ideas.
- Collaborate on planning and producing coverage of major issues and events of national interest for national broadcasts, specials and newscasts.
- Research, gather and fact-check complex stories of national interest, tracking key issues as they unfold.
Develop story plans. Conduct interviews and assess their relevance. Co-ordinate field production for television as needed. Gather audio recordings for radio. - Review audio and visual elements. Select or suggest the most impactful clips. Provide data and context for graphic illustrations in your reports.
- Pitch story angles. Write and narrate scripts.
- Suggest an intro. Write various copy stories in the style appropriate for the platform.
- Submit all story components for editorial approval.
- Supervise editing as required. For television news, isolate and assemble audio/video clips. Perform rough editing for radio and, if necessary, oversee the mixing process.
- Prepare live stand-ups. Propose questions and clips, and suggest their order.
- Deliver your reports, interviews and analysis segments on air.
- Oversee your reporting team in the field as needed.
- Alert the newsroom immediately to any breaking news or special coverage opportunities.
