Job Summary
The Manager, Projects and Policies is responsible for overseeing the Company’s tax provisions, benefit plan statements, foreign exchange and hedging processes, and other responsibilities within the Financial Reporting function such as supporting the quarterly financial close process and other projects and initiatives. The incumbent processes and reviews accounting entries, supporting schedules, reconciliations and analyses, and documents, analyzes, and improves processes to ensure appropriate accounting procedures are followed in alignment with regulatory standards.
TaxAccounting
- Oversee the preparation of the Company’s tax provisions of domestic subsidiaries as part of the consolidated financial statement reporting process
- Establish the effective tax rate reconciliation and the continuity of certain current and deferred tax accounts
- Responsible for interim and year‑end income tax note disclosures
- Manage the reconciliation between the tax provision and the previous year’s tax returns
- Evaluate and communicate appropriate accounting implications associated to tax related transactions
- Support the Canadian and US tax teams on tax provisions and tax returns as needed
- Oversee tax provision preparation process as part of the non‑consolidated financial statement reporting process of various subsidiaries
- Collaborate with auditors to provide information and clarification during internal and external audits
- Lead the team and the FX hedging process, including the review of setting up the U.S. dollar (USD) net asset position, the designation of USD debt and the closing of the daily hedge, variance explanations, and coordinating with Treasury
- Maintain the FX hedging documentation linked to establish a daily hedge in alignment with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and documentation concerning SOX’s internal controls
- Run the FX month‑end and reporting process, including reviewing reconciliations and quarterly roll of unrealized and realized FX
- Oversee discussions with Treasury, as well as internal and external auditors
- Review and oversee the preparation of annual financial statements for one and four of the Company’s Canadian and the United States’ (U.S.) Benefit Plans respectively, including CN Defined Contribution Pension Plan, Canadian National Railway Company Savings Plan for U.S. Operations, Stellar Distribution Services, Inc 401k Plan, Pension Plan for Employees of CN’s U.S. subsidiaries, and Bessemer Non‑contributory Pension Plan
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of regulatory filings of the above‑noted plans to the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) for Canadian plans and the Department of Labor (DOL) for U.S. plans by prescribed filing deadlines
- Audit plan‑level activity to ensure that plans are being operated in compliance with regulations as well as to their respective plan documents
- Provide assistance to stakeholders to ensure operational and administrative defects observed within the plans are corrected efficiently
- Oversee and mentor employees responsible for preparing annual financial statements
- Lead and coordinate the annual audit process for each plan with appropriate auditors
- Support the quarterly/interim and annual financial close process
- Lead and manage ad‑hoc projects and initiatives that align with strategic goals
- Coach indirect reports on tasks and projects including accounting system utilization, building reconciliations and accounting issues
- Coordinate tasks, ensure deadlines are met, and resources are allocated appropriately
- Manage business process improvements including leveraging technology to increase efficiency
- Assist with performance feedback and people development
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The position requires discretion in handling confidential matters.
