POSITION OVERVIEW

Caltrax is a Calgary-based leading full-service freight rolling stock repair service provider, with facilities strategically located in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Supporting our customers growing requirements, we also offer mobile repair and cleaning services. Currently, we are seeking an experienced manager to grow our MRU operations in Eastern Canada.

As a Mobile Operations Manager your responsibilities will include strategic assignment of tasks aligned with employee skills and expertise, management of daily work schedules, prioritization of workflow based production requirements, and proactive planning to support onsite operations. Additionally, this role involves overseeing staff recruitment, training, supervision, as well as conducting performance management and reviews.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional communication, organizational, and planning skills, consistently achieving key performance indicators (KPIs) such as utilization, labor efficiency, throughput, green card/FLHA metrics.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND

ACCOUNTABILITIES Job Planning
  • Strategize fleet maintenance programs and prioritize the order of repairs for program customers.
  • Communicate, coordinate, and schedule callout mobile repairs (Locomotive, Railcar)
  • Manage and guide direct reports in overseeing the entire lifecycle of locomotive repair processes, including the organization and assignment of tasks to ensure efficient and effective execution of repairs on locomotives and railcars.
  • Liaise with supply chain to manage truck stock vs central warehouse stock requirements.
  • Create and develop an onsite presence when and where required.
Safety & Regulatory Competence
  • Promote and foster a positive HSE culture on mobile locations. The MRU manager will uphold strict adherence to HSE company (3rd party on-site requirements) standards & policies.
  • Liaise with the HSE Manager and promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the organization (daily checklists, FLHAs, Green Cards).
Communication & Stakeholder Management
  • Liaise with external customers to provide the highest quality customer experience, satisfaction.
  • Improve brand loyalty, increase mobile-related sales, customer engagement and market positioning.
  • Manage customer inquiries concerning repairs, required materials, procedures, timelines.
  • Ensure all documentation (repairs/work orders, customer specific forms, cleaning certification, etc.) are accurate and submitted daily.
  • Responsible for achieving KPIs set by senior management which include but not limited to, labor utilization, labor efficiency, cost of poor quality, first-visit fix rate, revenue, profit.
Staff Planning and Development
  • Provide training and mentoring – ensure employees have the most recent work instructions and are qualified to perform the required tasks.
  • Foster and maintain a positive morale and aid in the career development for direct reports.
  • Lead, demonstrate, and cultivate a culture of ownership and accountability throughout the organization.
  • Approve daily timecards from direct reports.
  • All other duties assigned by management.
Business & Financial Accountability
  • Own the cost, revenue, and margin performance of mobile repair operations.
  • Evaluate and approve mobile repair work based on economic viability, safety, and operational impact.
  • Control overtime, travel, and emergency freight costs.
  • Identify and reduce cost of poor quality, including repeat callouts and temporary repairs.
  • Partner with senior leadership to justify investments in tooling, training, or inventory based on ROI.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5 – 10 years experience in the rail industry (Locomotive and railcar repair and maintenance).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills (proactively organize equipment and personnel requirements).
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to remain calm in high stress situations.
  • Knowledge of the industry standards, TC, and AAR regulations.
  • Knowledge of job site health and safety policies.
  • Knowledge of business fundamentals.
  • The candidate is expected to travel and be onsite when required. The position is a mix of both office and field presence, with flexibility allowances.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate well in English (50% of the time), as his or her duties require interaction with stakeholders and colleagues outside Quebec and Canada.
