Scale Clerk

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Office Manager, the Scale Clerk supports the landfill administrative operations while maintaining a safe working environment. They weigh all inbound and outbound vehicles and enter the appropriate data into a computer. They also contact customers and contractors on site, providing excellent customer service. They comply with company policies, procedures, and health, safety, and environmental regulations, and continue to improve the site’s safety culture.

• Weigh all inbound and outbound vehicles, inspect loose loads, direct them to proper unloading areas, and assist in the details of purchases.
• Ensure adherence to safety standards including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), remove hazards, and maintain cleanliness of the work area.
• Communicate clearly and concisely with landfill customers, management, and coworkers to ensure safety and customer service goals are met.
• Maintain accurate records as required and process paperwork, enter information, and create standardized reports.
• Deliver customer service excellence via telephone, two‑way radio, e‑mail, face‑to‑face, etc.
• Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Handle cash sales/local drawer.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Typical schedule for this position is 11:00 am–4:30 pm, Monday–Friday, with occasional Saturdays.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Basic math and data entry skills.
• Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple tasks at once.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to follow oral and written communication.
• Work cooperatively with other employees and the public.

Extensive communication with customers throughout the day. Clear and polite communication is a primary job function for the scale clerk.

Work environment involves exposure to hazards or physical risks requiring basic safety precautions.

The position requires routine exposure to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate and weather changes.

Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
