Special Education Teacher

Location: State‑Wide (Colorado) - Must be a Colorado Resident

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Director of Exceptional Student Services

Work Hours/Days: Full‑Time or Part‑Time based on student enrollment and service needs. Caseloads align with FTE and state/federal guidelines.

Wage: $50,000–$75,000 annually (prorated based on FTE and calendar)

Benefits: Employees working 30+ hours/week receive full benefits (health, dental, vision, 401k, paid leave). Employees under 30 hours/week receive paid sick leave.

Job Function

The Special Education Teacher provides high‑quality instruction, case management, and specialized services for students with disabilities across PK–12 settings. This role ensures that students receive individualized, evidence‑based academic, behavioral, and social/emotional supports aligned with their IEPs. The teacher collaborates with school teams, families, and related service providers to deliver compliant, student‑centered programming and to maintain accurate, timely documentation.

The Special Education Teacher applies strong instructional expertise, deep knowledge of service‑delivery models, and effective progress‑monitoring practices to support student growth. This role may also assist with evaluation processes, facilitate IEP meetings, and contribute to MTSS/RTI systems, trauma‑informed practices, and culturally responsive family engagement.

Core Responsibilities
Direct Instruction & Student Support
  • Provide specialized instruction aligned with IEP goals using evidence‑based practices.
  • Develop and implement differentiated lessons, accommodations, and modifications.
  • Deliver services across a continuum of settings (push‑in, pull‑out, co‑teaching, small group).
  • Monitor student progress using valid, reliable tools and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Support students' behavioral, social‑emotional, and executive‑functioning needs.
Case Management & Compliance
  • Serve as the IEP case manager for assigned students.
  • Draft IEPs, progress reports, and required documentation in alignment with state and federal regulations.
  • Track evaluation and IEP timelines and ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate and facilitate IEP meetings with clarity, professionalism, and cultural responsiveness.
  • Maintain accurate digital and physical student records for audits and monitoring.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Partner with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and instructional alignment.
  • Collaborate with related service providers, paraprofessionals, and administrators to ensure cohesive service delivery.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, services, and instructional plans.
  • Coordinate translation and interpretation services as needed to ensure equitable access.
Documentation & Data Systems
  • Maintain service logs, progress monitoring data, and compliance documentation in district systems.
  • Generate reports that support instructional decision‑making and compliance tracking.
  • Assist with evaluation processes by gathering instructional data and supporting assessment logistics.
School & Team Support
  • Participate in MTSS/RTI processes and contribute to problem‑solving teams.
  • Support paraprofessionals through modeling, coaching, and clear communication.
  • Assist with lesson planning, differentiation strategies, and service‑delivery coordination.
  • Provide additional instructional or case‑management support during staffing shortages or high‑need periods.
