Special Education Paraprofessional - Step Up to Life 18-21 Transition Program

Montrose County School District is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to support students ages 18-21 in our transition program. This position assists in implementing individualized student plans in functional, vocational, life skills, and community-based settings. The paraprofessional will work under the direction of a licensed special education teacher to promote student independence and successful transition to adult life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the implementation of student IEPs and transition plans through one-on-one and small group assistance in classroom, community, and job settings.
  • Assist students in developing and practicing skills related to daily living, communication, social interactions, self-advocacy, and workplace behavior.
  • Accompany and supervise students during off-campus community-based instruction and job placements.
  • Provide personal care or mobility assistance to students, if needed (e.g., toileting, feeding, transfers).
  • Monitor student behavior and implement behavior support plans as directed.
  • Collect data on student performance and report observations to the special education teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with students and families.
  • Participate in team meetings and required training sessions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities or in special education settings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, job coaches, and related service staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to support students with patience, consistency, and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in community-based instruction or job coaching.
  • Training in behavior support strategies and/or CPI.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.

Physical Requirements:

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 5 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This type of work involves sitting, walking, and/or standing. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.

Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job. CBI/FBI background clearance and a clean driving record. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
