Fleet Maintenance Technician

Under general direction, performs a variety of highly skilled diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a diverse fleet of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, heavy duty, medium duty, light duty, and specialized municipal equipment. Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment, manufacturer software, and technical resources to ensure fleet reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine service on City vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, motor graders, tractors, mowers, golf carts, and other equipment. Complete inspections, lubrication, fluid and filter changes, scheduled maintenance, and adjustments utilizing a variety of hand and power tools to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system failures on City vehicles and equipment. Inspect and test components to determine the root cause of equipment malfunctions. Ability to understand diagnostic software, testing equipment, wiring diagrams, and repair manuals. Replacing defective parts and verify repairs through operational testing ensuring the vehicle or equipment is safe and reliable.
  • Assist in training while offering support and modeling high performance behavior for new teammates and contractors as assigned.
  • Efficiently use acetylene or plasma torch to cut, weld, and fabricate materials.
  • Assist and participate in performing tasks within other City Departments as needed or assigned.
  • Install and maintain police vehicle equipment such as light bars, radios, docking stations etc.
  • Track time and materials for work orders as needed making sure that time is billable and work orders are closed when the repair is complete.
  • Learn and adhere to all safety protocols. Operate in a safe manner at all times including operation of vehicles and equipment. Wear and utilize appropriate PPE at all times. Promptly report unsafe conditions, equipment, or operations to a supervisor.
  • May travel to work sites to accurately test and repair any system on equipment or vehicles. Manage time efficiently. Develop and maintain effective customer relationships. Maintain cleanliness of shop, tools, and equipment.

Job requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Five (5) years experience in mechanical field or similar position and two (2) years of mechanical training preferred.
  • Requires knowledge of equipment, materials and procedures involved in maintenance and repair of city vehicles and equipment, with the ability to repair and maintain heavy equipment, gas and diesel vehicles and machinery at a highly skilled level.

Licensures & certificates (must be active and current.):

  • ASE Certifications in at least four (4) categories-Automotive, Truck and Hydraulics preferred.
  • Current Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s license preferred; must be able to obtain within 90 days…
