UPWARD Ambassador - Volunteer
This is a general pool application to volunteer in the UPWARD department at Southeast Community College’s Lincoln campus. The position is unpaid, part‑time, and temporary, available on an as‑needed basis. Volunteers will assist re‑entry students transitioning from a prison education program to an on‑campus program, helping them learn about opportunities at the college, develop a relationship with the campus, and establish a sense of belonging.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of UPWARD, the UPWARD Ambassador Volunteer will:
- Provide tours of the college to transitioning students.
- Staff the UPWARD Connect Center and provide information specific to transitioning students.
- Assist with special events, including working with community‑based organizations on campus.
- Develop an in‑depth knowledge of the college and attend and participate in training opportunities.
- Work with Educational Navigators to help students acclimate to on‑campus resources.
- Complete general UPWARD Connect Center office tasks, including mailings, general office work, stocking supplies, event set up/tear down, etc., on an as‑needed basis.
- Provide peer support when applicable.
Additional responsibilities may include:
- Performing associated duties in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Performing other college functions and duties as assigned.
- Working varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required; schedules are based on the needs of the college.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and presentation equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Basic computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience with the UPWARD program or lived experience in a carceral environment.
This position is unpaid. Southeast Community College requires a criminal history background check prior to the final offer.
