Position: Special Education Specialist (Education Specialist II)

Job Overview

Join the Nebraska Department of Education as a Special Education Specialist and help strengthen Special Education services and programs across the state. In this role, you’ll provide training, consultation, and technical assistance related to Special Education programs, including compliance, data use, and the Improving Learning for Children with Disabilities (ILCD) process. You’ll work closely with school districts, ESUs, service providers, and families to support effective programs and continuous improvement efforts.

We’re looking for someone who is collaborative and organized with strong communication and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to inquiries and provide consultative services and technical assistance to school districts, ESUs, service providers, and parents related to Special Education and implementation of the ILCD process.
  • Conduct district compliance monitoring for schools and school‑age programs, and assist districts with the collection and analysis of data used in the ILCD process.
  • Assist with preparation and submission of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) State and Annual Performance Plans.
  • Support training regarding data usage, and assist with development and delivery of training.
  • Provide support and guidance to school districts and ESUs related to Special Education finance and arrange and conduct training activities.
  • Assist with district funding allocations, conduct fiscal reviews, and determine training needs.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in the field of education or related subject area, one year of successful preK‑12 teaching or school administration experience in an approved or accredited Nebraska school or equivalent experience elsewhere, and eligibility to possess a current Nebraska Teaching or Administrative Certificate per §79‑807.
Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent Master of Arts in Teaching, three years of successful preK‑12 teaching or school administration experience, and eligibility per §79‑807.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Education and at least three years of successful preK‑12 experience in special education, with a Special Education endorsement.
