High School After School Tutor

Job Overview

This position is OnSite at East High School in Des Moines. Applicants will be working with high school students on reading and math skills. Hours are 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, with flexible days. A short‑term schedule of Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9:00 – 12:00 pm is available in August. The role is funded by the Beyond the Bell Educational Grant.

• Implement the Sylvan Sync Math and/or Reading program, providing an individualized, adaptable learning experience.
• Teach high school students at a 1:4 student-to-teacher ratio, covering fundamentals to higher-level support.
• Help students build foundational skills, confidence, and motivation in math, writing, and reading.
• Lead engaging lessons, offering guidance and feedback to foster academic growth.
• Participate in program evaluation and student progress monitoring.
• Work within the partnered after‑school program at East High School to support at‑risk students.

• Current DMPS team member, student teacher, para educator, or recent graduate entering the teaching field.
• Passion for helping at‑risk youth succeed and a positive attitude.
• Experience in early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school education (preferred).
• Strong communication skills and ability to work one-on-one with students.

• Hourly rate of $15 per hour.
