Position: Correctional Teacher I

Correctional Teacher I

Basic

Purpose:

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing professional teaching work at the elementary or secondary level in a correctional institution or facility; applying special methods and techniques in the habilitation of inmates.

Typical Functions
  • Conduct classes in elementary or secondary school subjects such as science, biology, English, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, commercial arts, practical arts, and physical education.
  • Teach language and language development and speech and speech reading for special pupils.
  • Plan, design, and implement courses of study for subjects taught; provide instruction; prepare and administer examinations.
  • Prepare progress reports, daily attendance reports, and report cards; maintain class and corridor discipline.
  • Advise and assist in planning and supervising class and student club activities.
  • Attend teacher meetings and participate in planning, scheduling, and development of the school program.
  • Maintain inventory of books and supplies.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff development training sessions; attend staffing meetings to provide input on students' progress.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Competencies
  • Knowledge of modern principles, practices, and materials in specialized fields of education.
  • Knowledge of content areas for instruction and accepted methods of teaching students with special needs.
  • Ability to supervise and instruct pupils and to establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Skill in organizing and presenting facts and opinions clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Competency in developing and presenting curriculum.
Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree and possession of a current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.

Salary

$82,302.00 – statutory salary based on education and experience.

Correctional Teacher, Level II (I23B)

Salary:
Statutory – salary subject to the state teacher pay scale. $85,731.00. Exempt. Effective Date: 08/23/2024.

Basic Purpose

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing professional teaching work at the elementary or secondary level in a correctional institution or facility; applying special methods and techniques in the habilitation of inmates.

Typical Functions
  • Conduct classes in core academic areas to meet students' individual needs.
  • Plan, design, and implement courses of study; prepare and administer examinations; prepare various administrative reports.
  • Develop and use special instructional materials or teaching aids for core areas; provide individual instruction, encouragement, counseling, and guidance as needed.
  • Maintain classroom and corridor discipline; advise and assist in planning and supervising class and student club activities; prepare and grade examination papers; prepare reports on attendance, progress, and capabilities for administrative purposes.
  • Attend teacher meetings and participate in planning, scheduling, and development of the school program.
  • Maintain inventory of books and supplies.
  • Participate in staff and facility head meetings; staff development training sessions; attend staffing meetings to provide input on students' progress.
  • Supervise the Correctional Teacher I at the assigned facility location.
  • Coordinate with facility heads.
  • Manage all aspects of the education system at the facility.
Qualifications
  • Current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.
  • Ability to supervise and instruct students, establish cooperative relationships, and engage in curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of modern educational principles and practices for teaching students with special needs.
