Internship Overview

The summer internship starts in May and ends in August. Interns will work alongside service test technicians and those in the quality control department for a local manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. Interns will work on special projects assigned to them and will learn about the refrigeration and HVAC industry.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Assist technicians with project errands.
  • Aid in the completion of tasks while maintaining safety standards.
  • Learn energy efficiency standards regarding material use and project standards.
  • Charge time accurately in time and attendance system on the computer to ensure accurate labor distribution and payroll.
  • Assist with loading and unloading equipment.
  • Learn proper installation techniques and how to remove, recycle or reuse equipment.
  • Braze and run drain lines in accordance with code.
  • Attending required training meetings and company meetings.
  • Learn to level equipment and read manufacturers' installation guides for HVAC equipment.
  • Conduct quality checks on industrial/commercial refrigeration and HVAC equipment to be installed in new construction projects.
  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and correct deficiencies in a test lab environment.
  • Contribute to team effort by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.
  • Complete any task as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.
  • Attend work as required and arrive at work on time.
  • Follow manufacturing instructions, work independently without constant supervision, be self‑motivated, and complete job assignments on time.
  • Care for tools and equipment. Advise supervisor/maintenance of equipment that is not working correctly.
Desired Qualifications

Education & Experience: Student enrolled in an accredited degree program for ACR or Engineering.

Skills: Effective communication skills & listening skills. Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to read a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch. Basic computer skills.

Working Environment

Work is performed in an industrial production area for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is high in some areas. Exposed to extreme temperatures in summer and to live electrical power when testing equipment. Possible stress caused by the pressure of meeting deadlines and product quality standards.

Physical Requirements:

Sustained use of eyesight for functions such as visual inspection, reading, measuring, and operating hand tools, along with the ability to see objects and detect motion at wide angles (peripheral vision) to maintain employee safety, ability to wear PPE (i.e., safety glasses, hearing protection).
