Job Description

The assistant principal assists with the implementation, planning, evaluation, and overall administration of school programs, working alongside staff, students, parents, and the community.

Major Functions
  • A. Pre-Class Organization – Assist in implementing student orientation and registration activities.
  • B. Planning the School Program – Assist in developing and establishing school goals and objectives and planning the instructional program.
  • C. Implementing the School Program – Provide direction to staff in implementing goals, and meet with staff for professional development.
  • D. Evaluating and Remediation of the School Program – Assist in evaluating the program and staff, and initiate needed improvements.
  • E. Involving Staff in Budget Allocations – Involve staff in setting budget priorities.
  • F. Professional Competence – Upgrade own professional knowledge and skills.
  • G. Coordinating Budgets and Schedules – Assist in preparing and managing budgets and schedules and in coordinating the co‑curricular program.
  • H. Handling Disciplinary Procedures – Define and disseminate discipline policy to parents, students, staff, and the community.
  • I. Coordinating and Communicating School Structure – Communicate and carry out established policies, delegate tasks, and communicate goals to the community.
  • J. Coordinating School Services and Resources – Supervise auxiliary services and use community resources to supplement the school program.
  • K. Facilitating Organizational Efficiency – Promote open communication, positive student attitudes, and respect dignity and worth of staff and students.
  • L. Assisting in Record Keeping – Assist in completing records and reports, and supervise inventory of supplies, textbooks, equipment, and materials.
Minimum Training and Experience

Master’s degree in Education Administration; 3–5 years of classroom teaching experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements
  • Must possess a teaching certificate from the State of North Carolina.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, and a motor vehicle; able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and signal people to convey information; give instructions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability: Read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and charts; deliver presentations in Standard English.

Intelligence: Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.

Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information; explain procedures; follow oral and written instructions.

Numerical Aptitude: Use mathematical formulas and principles of algebra, descriptive statistics, and statistical theory.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for proper dimensions.

Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes accurately in office equipment use.

Manual Dexterity: Handle a variety of office equipment and hand tools.

Color Discrimination: Differentiate between colors and shades.

Interpersonal Temperament: Adapt to performing under stress and emergency situations.

Physical Communication: Communicate via telephone; talk and hear effectively.
