About the Role

The Part-Time Arts & Events Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Town-sponsored community-wide special events and performing arts programs. This role oversees a diverse portfolio including concerts, community event permitting, receptions, grand openings, and employee recognition events for the Parks & Recreation Department.

This part-time position serves as a key liaison between Town departments, volunteers, and outside organizations. The Coordinator manages venue calendars (including the MPAC and Liberty Park), supervises intermittent staff, and provides technical oversight for performances. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with the flexibility to work primarily weekdays, but with the availability to work evenings and weekends to ensure the success of live events and productions.

Responsibilities
  • Event Management: Plan, implement, and evaluate all aspects of community-wide special events, receptions, groundbreakings, grand openings, and ribbon cuttings.
  • Performing Arts Coordination: Manage performing arts rentals from initial inquiry through invoicing; respond to leads and conduct venue tours for potential clients.
  • Calendar Oversight: Manage schedules for the MPAC and Liberty Park, including performances, rentals, and community groups; coordinate with the Charles Mack Citizen Center (CMCC) for Joe V. Knox Auditorium scheduling.
  • Technical Supervision: Attend technical week rehearsals to assist with performance aspects; advise on technical specifications for lighting and sound equipment.
  • Permitting & Administration: Coordinate and administer the community events permit program and implement employee recognition activities.
  • Facility & Equipment Care: Monitor the condition of lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for repairs and orient renters to venue safety and technical components.
  • Vendor & Staff Oversight: Coordinate with event contractors and vendors; recruit, train, and assign student, volunteer, or paid intermittent staff for individual shows.
  • Collaboration: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, stakeholders, and the general public; participate in staff committees as necessary.
  • Strategic Growth: Research new event and performing arts opportunities and implement them as directed.
  • Documentation: Track vendor, sponsor, staff, and attendee information with meticulous detail.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three to five years of related experience in event planning, performing arts coordination, or technical theater production.
  • Experience supervising volunteers or intermittent staff and managing venue schedules is preferred.
  • Preferred: Associate degree in Theatre Production, Event Management, Parks and Recreation, or a related field with five years of experience.
Special Requirement
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
