This position is located at Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville, North Carolina, a 123‑bed facility offering comprehensive medical services, including 24‑hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, and surgical specialties.

This position offers a commitment bonus of $10,000 or higher, based on experience, if eligible.

Summary & Work Performed
  • Operates sonographic equipment, performs diagnostic examinations, and communicates results of sonographic investigations.
  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic ultrasound examinations (abdominal, vascular, small‑parts, OB‑GYN, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional).
  • Follows established departmental policy and uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify and record findings.
  • Utilizes independent judgment to differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information with medical history, and communicates findings to the Radiologist.
  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and privacy during examinations.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and the health care team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the ultrasound department, including exam tracking and billing.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area.
  • Establishes productive, ethical working relationships with coworkers, referring providers, and commercial agencies.
  • Assists with training of ultrasound students during clinical rotations.
  • Performs independent ultrasound procedures without assistance from fellow sonographers.
  • Provides direction and instruction to existing personnel and training to new sonographers.
  • Assists in teaching ultrasound technology to new physicians, residents, and fellows.
  • Coordinates with other staff to assure appropriate patient care.
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work herein.
  • Supports career growth and enrichment within Imaging Services through a clinical ladder program available at all Duke Health hospitals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Level I – Must obtain ARDMS certification as required within 18 months of employment.
  • Level II – Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a sonographer.
  • Level III – Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the specialty modality for which promotion is sought.
Minimum Qualifications Education
  • Graduate or completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification, or currently holds the required registry or certification.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Highly Preferred.
Experience
  • None required beyond the education/certification requirements listed above.
  • Level I – Must obtain ARDMS certification as required within 18 months of employment;
    Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Highly Preferred.
  • Level II – Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a sonographer.
  • Level III – Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the specialty modality for which promotion is sought.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
  • ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.
  • BLS certification.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Highly Preferred.
