As a Field Service Technician‑Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and/or other business systems). You will perform work associated with splicing and maintaining outside‑plant facilities and equipment, installing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within telecommunications and will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers, proactively selling TDS services and products.

Responsibilities
  • Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers.
  • Identify defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
  • Perform pole climbing and operate construction equipment.
  • Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage and maintain an orderly log of all location requests.
  • Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support techniques and responses to “trouble” dispatches.
  • Support record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
  • Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services.
  • Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside‑plant facilities.
Qualifications Required
  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, or switch training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
Other
  • Must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including background checks administered by the customer.
  • Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel, and overtime.
  • Pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum and maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
  • Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services, including inside wiring, internet, bonding, grounding, fiber optic transmission, structured wiring, and more.
  • Experience with computer applications: databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Explorer, CD‑ROMs.
  • Work independently with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service, sales, and communications skills.
  • Proven organizational and multi‑tasking skills.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Location

Residence within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Mooresville, NC warehouse at 420 S Academy St, Mooresville, NC 28115.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Requires sitting, standing, writing, operating a computer, communicating with customers, moving, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs (occasionally 100 lbs). Work may be outdoors, in mechanical or equipment rooms, with exposure to moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, and extreme weather.

Pay Range

Salary: $25.13/Hr. – $37.69/Hr. Actual offers based on skills, qualifications, experience, location, and role‑specific competencies.
