The Town of Mooresville is seeking a dedicated professional to join our Public Services team as a Mechanic I, II, or III, with the final classification determined based on the candidate's experience and certifications.
Employees in this series perform critical maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of Town assets, including light vehicles, heavy trucks, and specialized heavy equipment. From routine oil changes and tire repairs to complex hydraulic troubleshooting and fire apparatus certifications, our mechanics ensure the Town’s fleet remains safe and operational. This role requires exercising judgment and initiative while working in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Dutiesand Responsibilities Mechanic I ($43,500.00-$54,300.00)
- Position Overview:
Performs semi-skilled, moderate work in the maintenance and repair of Town vehicles and equipment. - Key Duties:
- Performs standard services such as lubricating, fueling, changing oil, and greasing parts.
- Charges and installs batteries.
- Changes and repairs tires and inner tubes.
- Performs minor motor tune‑ups and emergency roadside maintenance.
- Assists other mechanics with fabrication and more complex repairs.
- Position Overview:
Performs highly skilled, complex work on heavy trucks and equipment. - Key Duties:
- All duties of Mechanic I.
- Troubleshoots and analyzes problems on all equipment and vehicles.
- Determines causes of malfunctions and repairs steering systems, pumps, and brakes.
- Installs and repairs electrical emergency warning devices.
- Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC systems.
- Performs welding and fabrication.
- Position Overview:
Performs the most complex electrical and mechanical repairs and serves as a lead when necessary. - Key Duties:
- Troubleshoots and maintains hydraulic and operational systems for heavy vehicles and specialized equipment.
- Specifically required to repair and service Fire Department equipment and apparatus.
- Performs NFPA annual tests on ground ladders, generators, and pumps.
- Possesses proficient to advanced welding and fabrication skills.
- Functions as the Lead Mechanic when the lead is unavailable and manages shop decisions.
- Education/
Experience:
High School diploma/GED and 1–2 years of experience, or an Associate’s Degree. - License:
Valid Class B NC Commercial Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within one year). - Certifications:
NC Safety and Emission Certification, Air Brake Inspection Class, ASE Brake certification, and 1-EVT L1 Certification.
