About the Role

The Street Maintenance Crew Leader performs responsible technical and skilled work supervising a unit engaged in the repair, replacement, and installation of Town streets, storm drainage, and right‑of‑way maintenance.

This role involves leading a crew in the upkeep of related infrastructure, ensuring that all work is completed to established standards while maintaining a heavy focus on crew safety and the proper setup of work zones.

The Crew Leader must exercise judgment and initiative in carrying out assignments and is responsible for coordinating the effective use of equipment, materials, and staff.

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to extreme weather conditions and various work hazards such as loud noise, chemicals, and moving mechanical parts.

This position also serves in the absence of the Supervisor and may be subject to after‑hours call‑backs.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and participate in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, storm drainage, sidewalks, and other public infrastructure.
  • Coordinate the use of available equipment, materials, and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy.
  • Ensure crew members take proper tools, equipment, and supplies to work sites.
  • Participate in the training, safety, and performance coaching of division employees.
  • Operate heavy construction equipment in tight places requiring high levels of care and skill.
  • Estimate and order necessary materials for projects and complete work orders.
  • Participate in snow or ice removal operations.
  • Coordinate work with contractors and participate in workflow planning.
  • Respond to citizen requests and complaints.
  • Supervise right‑of‑way maintenance depending on specific assignment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Five to seven years of experience in street construction, maintenance, and repair, or Right‑of‑Way maintenance and repair.
  • Experience must include heavy equipment operation and some lead worker experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial North Carolina Driver's License.
  • For Right‑of‑Way assignments:
    Possession of a valid North Carolina Pesticide Operators License
