Laboratory Technician

Job Description

The Laboratory Technician - Environmental Monitoring supports the environmental monitoring program for a cosmetics and over-the-counter (OTC) manufacturing facility. This role focuses on water system sampling, environmental surface and air monitoring, and facility condition monitoring, while microbiological testing is performed by an external contract laboratory. The technician uses strong aseptic technique, follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and maintains accurate documentation to ensure product quality and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

+ Perform routine environmental monitoring sampling throughout manufacturing, filling, and support areas, including surface, air, and personnel monitoring where applicable.

+ Collect purified water (PW), reverse osmosis (RO), or similar water system samples in strict accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and aseptic technique requirements.

+ Perform water system testing and sample plates using aseptic technique to support environmental and water monitoring programs.

+ Prepare, label, and document environmental and water samples accurately before packaging and shipping them to third-party microbiology laboratories.

+ Maintain and verify temperature and humidity probes by performing routine checks, recording results, and promptly notifying appropriate personnel of any deviations.

+ Trend and review environmental monitoring and water system data to identify out-of-specification or out-of-trend results and escalate issues as required.

+ Ensure accurate, complete, and contemporaneous documentation in logbooks, controlled forms, and electronic systems in alignment with good documentation practices.

+ Support investigations related to environmental monitoring or water system excursions by assisting with data review, root cause analysis, and documentation of findings.

+ Maintain environmental monitoring supplies, media, and sampling materials, ensuring proper storage conditions and adequate inventory levels.

+ Adhere at all times to GMP, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, and internal safety procedures.

+ Support internal and external audits and inspections by retrieving and organizing environmental monitoring and water system documentation.

+ Work independently with minimal supervision while consistently following SOPs and site procedures.

Essential Skills

+ Demonstrated experience with water sampling and water testing in a GMP or similarly regulated setting.

+ Proven ability to perform aseptic technique for water system testing and sample plate handling.

+ Working knowledge of GMP requirements and practical experience applying them in a manufacturing or laboratory environment.

+

Experience with environmental monitoring activities, including surface, air, and personnel monitoring.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Experience in cosmetics, OTC, pharmaceutical, or personal care manufacturing environments.

+ Hands-on experience with water systems such as purified water (PW) and reverse osmosis (RO) systems.

+ Background in quality control or laboratory testing within a GMP-regulated facility.

Work Environment

This role is based in a cosmetics manufacturing environment that operates under GMP, GLP, and OSHA requirements. The position is a first-shift opportunity, typically starting at 6:00 or 6:30 a.m., and supports manufacturing, filling, and related support areas. Work involves routine movement through production and utility spaces to perform environmental monitoring, water sampling, and facility condition checks. The technician works with water systems such as purified water and reverse osmosis, temperature and humidity probes, environmental monitoring plates, and related laboratory supplies.
