Job SummaryPeer Coaches for the Center for Career Development and Experiential Education help students develop resumes, practice interview techniques, and learn effective networking skills. They are also involved with organizing and implementing events such as the Career and Internship Fair, Etiquette Dinner, and more.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties and responsibilities may involve performing analytical tasks and/or developing comprehensive reports. The advanced student assistant may conduct a significant amount of office or field research, aid in the analysis of research and editing or writing reports. This position may oversee special projects and initiatives. The position may also be used as an entry level student supervisor classification. This position will require a high level of contact with internal and external customers.
A substantial level of teamwork is expected. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Provide constructive criticism on drafts of resumes and cover letters through in-person appointments and email correspondence
- Presents to classes on topics including:
Resume writing, Cover letters, Networking, How to Prepare for a Career Fair, etc. - Evaluates mock interviews through online Interview Link system and provide suggestions
- Prepares and conducts face-to-face mock interviews with students/alumni based on specific job descriptions
- Assists with organizing and hosting Career Fairs and Networking events
- Teaches students how to use MSU Eagle Career Net system to upload documents and apply for positions
- Answers career inquiries via phone, email, and in-person
- Must be a current MSU student
- Must maintain satisfactory academic progress
- Must have or be able to successfully complete a significant amount training/certification
- Must have a high level of technology skills
- Must have a high level of knowledge of the operations and policies of the unit or department
- For positions that supervise, must have the ability to lead and direct others
- Must possess independent judgment, discretion and decision-making skills
- Must have a proven track record of meeting deadlines and working under pressure
- Must be able to handle stress as well as to react quickly in emergency situations
- Have a good work ethic, pleasant attitude, and provide friendly customer service
- Maintain confidentiality with student and employer records and sign a confidentiality statement
- Have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Have good written and verbal communication skills
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
- Basic job search techniques and electronic job applications
- Resume/cover letter writing and critique
- On-line mock interview evaluation
- Preparing a mock interview specific to a job description
- Conducting face-to-face mock interviews
This position will be working in an office most of the time. Sometimes incumbent will be outside during all types of weather or temperatures or in other buildings on campus setting up and working events. At times, position requires a significant amount of walking and light lifting (25 pounds or less). There will be interaction with faculty, staff, students, employers, community partners and parents.
