Job Description:

Security Officers maintain a safe and secure environment at our Health Care facilities by protecting patients, visitors, staff, and property. They patrol buildings and grounds, monitor security systems, and maintain a visible presence to deter unsafe or suspicious activity. Security Officers respond to emergency alarms, assistance calls, and sensitive situations, working collaboratively with Communications, other security personnel, and the University Police Department.

They assist with disorderly or combative individuals, provide crisis intervention, and conflict resolution, and help de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Additional responsibilities include completing security reports, conducting basic investigative reviews, enforcing facility policies, monitoring access control and surveillance systems, and assisting patients, visitors, and staff to support a safe healthcare environment.

Essential Functions
  • Patrols assigned areas, maintaining a visible security presence to deter crime and provide assistance as needed.
  • Monitors security equipment and systems, including CCTV, access control, alarm systems, and radio communications, to maintain situational awareness and respond appropriately to incidents.
  • Conducts routine inspections of facilities and security systems to identify and report irregularities such as fire hazards, unsecured doors, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns.
  • Controls access to facilities by permitting authorized individuals’ entry, restricting unauthorized access, issuing passes, and monitoring visitor activity after hours.
  • Responds to suspicious activity, emergency alarms, and calls for service, taking appropriate action, including notifying police, fire departments, or other emergency responders when necessary.
  • Investigates incidents, unusual circumstances, and reports from staff, visitors, medical staff, and patients; conducts basic investigative reviews and prioritizes information for reporting purposes.
  • Assists medical personnel and staff in managing disruptive or combative individuals and provides crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and de-escalation when appropriate.
  • Warns violators of policy or rule infractions and takes appropriate action to prevent losses, damage, or unsafe conditions.
  • Maintains accurate documentation, including Daily Activity Reports, incident reports, lost and found logs, and other required departmental records in accordance with departmental procedures and General Orders.
  • Provides customer service by interacting with students, faculty, staff, patients, visitors, and vendors; offering information, safety guidance, escorts, and assistance as needed while maintaining professionalism and sensitivity in difficult situations.
  • Assists the University police department during special events and as requested.
  • Attends required training sessions and completes assigned training to remain compliant with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor while representing the department and the University.
  • Performs administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. All experience must be paid and in the same related field. Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week. Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
