Position: Shop Production Manager - Electrical Switchboard Manufacturing (Hands-On)

The Shop Manager is a working leader responsible for directing daily shop-floor activities while actively participating in the assembly, wiring, and testing of electrical switchboards and power distribution equipment. This role balances hands‑on electrical work with supervision, scheduling, quality control, and safety oversight in a small, team‑oriented shop environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Actively build, wire, and test electrical switchboards alongside the production team
  • Lead by example in workmanship, productivity, and adherence to standards
  • Assign daily tasks and adjust priorities in real time based on workload and material availability
  • Troubleshoot technical and production issues directly on the shop floor
Technical Oversight & Compliance
  • Ensure all assemblies comply with UL or NEC standards
  • Interpret and execute electrical schematics, one‑lines, layouts, and bills of material
  • Verify correct component installation, wire sizing, torque values, labeling, and grounding/bonding
  • Serve as the primary shop contact during UL inspections and audits
Quality Control & Testing
  • Perform and oversee in‑process and final testing (continuity, functional, insulation resistance, hipot as applicable)
  • Review and complete test documentation and as‑built records
  • Identify and correct workmanship issues before final inspection or shipment
  • Drive first‑pass quality and minimize rework
Workforce Supervision & Training
  • Direct and support a team of approximately 15 panel builders and electricians
  • Train new hires and cross‑train existing employees on shop standards and best practices
  • Provide day‑to‑day coaching, feedback, and performance guidance
  • Support a positive, accountable, and safety‑focused shop culture
  • Maintain weekly shop meetings to ensure employees are current with workload and discuss plan of action for that week. Discuss and resolve any internal issues
Safety & Housekeeping
  • Continuing to develop and enforce company safety policies
  • Ensure proper PPE use, lockout/tagout compliance, and safe work practices where required
  • Conduct toolbox talks and address safety concerns immediately
  • Maintain a clean, organized shop
Materials, Tools & Equipment
  • Coordinate with purchasing and engineering to prevent material shortages or delays
  • Monitor material usage and report discrepancies or shortages
  • Ensure proper use and basic maintenance of shop tools and equipment
Communication & Coordination
  • Communicate daily production status, issues, and completion forecasts to management
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, project management, and purchasing
  • Participate in job kickoffs and post‑job reviews
Qualifications:

Required

  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience preferred but not required. Experience with building electrical switchboards or similar power distribution equipment is preferred but not required
  • Prior lead, foreman, or informal supervisory experience in a small shop environment
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one‑lines, and layout drawings
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot electrical and production issues
  • Fluid using windows base software for reports, emails and drawing access
Preferred
  • Journeyman Electrician license or equivalent experience
  • UL 891 and/or UL 508A shop experience
  • Experience working directly with ABS & UL inspectors
  • Familiarity with basic production tracking or ERP systems
  • Strong working knowledge of UL standards and NEC requirements
  • Strong technical leadership and mentoring ability
  • High attention to detail and craftsmanship
  • Practical problem‑solving and decision‑making skills
  • Ability to balance hands‑on work with supervisory responsibilities
  • Reliable and dependable
Physical & Work Environment
  • Primarily shop‑based with regular hands‑on electrical work
  • Ability to stand, bend, lift, and work on large electrical assemblies
  • Ability to lift up to 75lbs
  • Work around de‑energized and test‑related energized equipment in accordance with safety policies
