Overview
This position is located within the academic school at Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC (Burke County). The principal leads and manages the school's daily operations, staff supervision, academic programs, and budget. The role ensures compliance with district, NCDAC, and NCDPI policies while monitoring instructional quality and student performance. The principal collaborates with institutional leadership and community college partners to support joint programs and expand student access to educational and vocational courses.
The role oversees both the Youth School (up to age 22) and Education Services (22 and older) and reports to the Assistant Warden of Programs and the Assistant Superintendent of Education.
- Conceptualize and uphold the mission, vision, and belief statements of the school district and broad goals of the school. Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs to best meet student and staff needs, ensuring alignment with the School Improvement Plan and district goals.
- Serve as an instructional leader responsible for the teaching and learning process school-wide.
- Provide and support appropriate professional development for staff that encourages growth, enhances instructional quality, and provides opportunities for staff participation in the school program.
- Establish, implement, and evaluate procedures used to carry out the daily routine of the school.
- Ensure that the school program aligns with the school district's legal, financial, and organizational structure.
Minimum education:
a master’s degree or above in an area relevant to the position and a current (non‑expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License (Class Code M, S, or
D) with certification in the area of School Principal or eligible for provisional certification.
Experience:
at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in educational administration, including supervising a school staff, developing curriculum, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with state educational standards. Preferred skills include: ensuring a safe and welcoming environment, implementing discipline and attendance systems, supervising and appraising staff, evaluating student progress, establishing effective relationships with stakeholders, and communicating effectively in oral and written formats.

Salary is based on the NCDPI Salary Schedule and years of experience.
